COD and BOD removal in waterways

The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) represents the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) consumed by biological organisms when they decompose organic matter in water. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is the amount of oxygen consumed when the water sample is chemically oxidised.

BOD and COD can reduce the DO of lakes and rivers, and low concentrations can cause eutrophication and harm aquatic life.

Municipal wastewater discharge and industrial processes can create water high in COD/BOD, requiring careful treatment before discharge to preserve the health of waterways.

Water Treatment

BOD is commonly treated by biological methods, such as adding bacteria and providing favourable conditions to break down the organic matter quickly. Sewage treatment plants commonly use return activated sludge (RAS) as a bacteria source to treat organics in the water.

Our Technologies

Clean TeQ Water provides tertiary treatment of wastewater, polishing nutrients or improving water quality once the majority of COD and BOD has been removed.

Treatment methods such as activated sludge or membrane bioreactors are commonly used as secondary treatment methods to remove COD and BOD.

Removing COD from wastewater or brines is one of our key focus areas. Depending in its speciation we can remove or destroy COD using either macroporous resin adsorption, or by encapsulating specific bacteria in BIOCLENS®.
